Residents of Umuagu community in Umuguma, the headquarters of Owerri West local government area of Imo state could not sleep Tuesday as more than 20 armed robbers with sophisticated weapons stormed the area.
An indigene of the area, Akalazu, who witnessed the incident spoke to Blueprint correspondent, saying the men of the underworld came to the area around 3am and carted away people’s property, including vehicles.
“They shot into the air severally and went from house to house, to force people to transfer money to them via POS machines even as they carted away valuable items,” he said.
He further stated that: “It is suspected that the same group of people had some months ago robbed residents of Gashike area in World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri, not too far away from Umuguma because of their mode of operation. They had a successful operation and went home unmolested. But two of the armed robbers in Tuesday’s attack were shot and killed by the vigilante.”
